Compassionate and Expert Care Inspires a Gift to Help Others
Betsy Schaper has been a self-described cheerleader for Greenwich Hospital since 2003, when her elderly father, Armin, underwent a 12-hour spinal fusion surgery with neurosurgeon Amory Fiore, MD. Beyond their relief that the operation was a success, what really caught the attention of Betsy and her brother, Doug, was the surgeon’s exceptional communication skills and warm bedside manner. Their relationship with Dr. Fiore continues to this day.
“I’ve always thought that the doctor is the bridge between a patient and the hospital, and is really what builds the bond between the two,” reflects Schaper. “For our family, our feelings for Greenwich Hospital developed very strongly because of Dr. Fiore and what he was able to do for our father, and for both of us, as we both eventually needed his surgical skills.”
Residents of Harrison, New York, for nearly 60 years, Betsy’s parents died within one year of each other. Channeling their grief into something positive, Betsy and Doug established the Ethel and Armin Schaper Charitable Foundation. They directed their first gift, in 2008, to Greenwich Hospital: The Medical/Surgical Intensive Care Unit bears their parents’ names and honors their beloved surgeon.
More recently, Betsy decided to add Greenwich Hospital to her estate plans, designating her eventual bequest toward the ICU. “I’ve always supported Greenwich Hospital so I could do my part helping others benefit from the excellent doctors at our local hospital and the medical advances they bring to us as patients.”

An Enduring Gift to Honor a Lifetime of Memories
Eileen Clancy was the epitome of a people person. During her 71 years as a Greenwich resident, she placed her many friends and community activities at the center of a vibrant, fun-loving and full life.
Affectionately nicknamed the “Queen of Byram Shore Road” she was adored by her neighbors, fellow parishioners at Sacred Heart Church, and many friends at the Byram Garden Club, Greenwich Senior Center, and the local AARP chapter in Glenville.
If there was one place that Mrs. Clancy considered her home away from home, it was at Greenwich Hospital. As a longtime volunteer greeter at the hospital’s front Welcome Desk, it was here that the people person in Mrs. Clancy thrived. Even when she was no longer able to drive, her indomitable spirit prevailed. She remained dedicated to her Greenwich Hospital volunteer role, making it a priority to arrive at the welcome desk to greet and help visitors.
Married and widowed twice, Mrs. Clancy passed away in 2019 at age 95. She left behind beloved friends and many memories chronicled in photo albums that she cherished. She also ensured that her dedication to Greenwich Hospital would continue, even when she was no longer here to share her bright smile and warm greeting. Through a generous legacy gift, Mrs. Clancy ensured that her long-term plans included the hospital she called “home.”
Benedict Portal, Greenwich Hospital 1917
Elias C. Benedict, a Wall Street investor and yachtsman, often called “The Commodore,” provided the land and donated $250,000 for a new Greenwich Hospital that opened in 1917. The Benedict Portal, the hospital’s main entrance for more than three decades, is an architectural masterpiece by Thomas Hastings. Although the building was razed in 1996 to make way for the Helmsley Medical Building, the Italian Renaissance doors were preserved and restored. In 2012, the doors returned to Greenwich Hospital and are located off William Street, behind the Cohen Pavilion.
