Gala for Greenwich Hospital honors treasures of the community
Benefit raises over $1 million for the Emergency Department

Greenwich, CT (Oct. 24, 2018) – Over 350 supporters, celebrating a shared commitment to the critical and compassionate care of Greenwich Hospital’s Emergency Department, attended the “Treasure Gala for Greenwich Hospital,” held at Greenwich Country Club on Saturday, Oct. 20. Over $1 million was raised for these vital services.

The Bennett and Kanarek families, the Greenwich Hospital Auxiliary and the O’Malley family were honored for their volunteerism, leadership and philanthropic engagement in support of Greenwich Hospital.

Suni Unger, CEO and founder of Unger Publishing and Serendipity magazine stepped to the podium as Master of Ceremonies for the evening, sharing her personal journey with the Emergency Department and commitment to the hospital. “If we must go to the Emergency Department, there is no better place to be than Greenwich Hospital,” she said. Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Arthur Martinez, reflected on how these special honorees were not only donors, but devoted volunteers. Greenwich resident Karen Rubin, chair of the gala committee, recognized her fellow committee members and the hard work of Greenwich Hospital’s leadership.

Guests enjoyed a glimmering event, replete with exquisite décor by Renny and Reed, overseen by Sebass Events and Entertainment, live and silent auctions and popular music performed by Hank Lane Revue.

Greenwich Hospital President and Chief Executive Officer Norman G. Roth, spoke about the importance of funding the Emergency Department and spoke about some of the significant improvements that have taken place there. “Early last year, we celebrated the completion of a multi-million dollar renovation project designed to deliver critical and life-saving care more quickly and efficiently. It was funded significantly by donor contributions. Most people visit the Emergency Department at least once in a lifetime either for themselves or for a loved one. Greenwich Hospital’s Emergency Department sees nearly 40,000 patients each year, 25 percent of whom are children. Despite the fast pace, our doctors and nurses take the time to keep patients and their families informed and reassured,” he said.

In three short video messages, honorees Carl Bennett and his daughter Robin Kanarek, Mary Alice and Thomas O’Malley, and Greenwich Hospital Auxiliary past president Christine Randolph with director of volunteer services Stacey Green, expressed their thanks to Greenwich Hospital. Their enthusiasm and devotion may best be summed up in Thomas O’Malley’s comments “It’s clear to me that at one point or another everyone in the community is going to need Greenwich Hospital. And in turn it’s clear to me that the people in the community must continue to support this incredible institution in every way possible.” A fourth video about the Emergency Department brought home the quality and service delivered every day.

A rousing live auction was led by veteran auctioneer, Jason Lamoreaux. Items up for bidding included a Tuscan wine and villa experience, exquisite diamond jewelry by Betteridge Jewelers and Shreve, Crump & Low and a golf outing at Forest Creek Club in Pinehurst, NC. The auction concluded with a successful paddle raise to garner further support for the hospital. Hank Lane Revue took the stage immediately following the live auction as guests danced to popular tunes.

Comprehensive emergency care
Greenwich Hospital’s newly renovated Emergency Department is staffed by board-certified emergency medicine physicians, physician assistants, nurses and nurse practitioners trained to handle medical conditions from stroke and heart attacks to broken bones and sprains. Advanced CT scan and radiology technology are embedded in the ED, providing fast, comprehensive diagnostic services all in one place. Experts who provide specialized medical services, such as primary angioplasty and emergency surgical care, are available at a moment’s notice. Within the last year the ED has enhanced services by bringing Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital pediatric emergency medicine specialists to care for children in the ED, offering the community the most advanced pediatric emergency services in the region. This will be complemented by the expanded services of Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital Pediatric Specialty Center.
